Everything you need to know about China’s new measures to face US visa restriction

Back in May, the United States announced restrictions for Hong Kong and Chinese officials. This furthermore provide constraints in terms of visa travel. To this end, China has not be fallen of their identity but is readying itself to take new countermeasures for tackling this setback.

Now, this decision follows the recent guilty verdicts in the National Security Law trial involving pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong. According to the State Department, fourteen activists were found guilty, while two were acquitted. Critics argue that these verdicts further harm Hong Kong’s legal system and its status as a global financial center. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed deep concern over these developments in a statement on Friday.

Key Points:

  • New visa restrictions target Chinese and Hong Kong officials.
  • The verdict impacts 14 pro-democracy activists.
  • The trial’s outcome raises concerns about Hong Kong’s rule of law and financial reputation.

Now it is important to look at the scenario of both inbound as well as outbound travel.

Outbound Travel:

USA

  • In 2022, the total number of outbound travelers from the US rebounded to 80.7 million, showing a significant increase of 64% compared to 2021. This was nearly 81% of the record 99.7 million outbound travelers in 2019.
  • The largest outbound market for US travelers was Mexico, with 33.5 million travelers in 2022, marking an increase of 17% from 2021. The next largest destination was Canada, with 9.1 million travelers, an impressive 334% increase from the previous year.
  • Overseas travel from the US accounted for 38.1 million trips in 2022, which is 109% higher than in 2021, reaching 85% of the 2019 level. The United Kingdom and France were among the top overseas destinations, with 3.7 million and 3.1 million travelers respectively in 2022

China

  • The data specific to outbound travel from China indicates a slow recovery compared to other regions. As of 2023, China’s outbound travel was still significantly below pre-pandemic levels. For instance, the number of Chinese tourists visiting the US in September 2023 was only 48% of the 2019 levels.
  • Popular destinations for Chinese tourists include neighboring Asian countries, Europe, and the United States, though recovery rates vary widely.

Inbound Travel

USA

In September 2023, the US saw 5.8 million international visitor arrivals, which was a 19.3% increase compared to September 2022. However, this was still only 86.2% of the pre-COVID visitor volume in 2019.Canada and Mexico were the top source markets for inbound travel to the US, with 1.5 million and 1.3 million visitors respectively in September 2023. Other significant contributors included the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan.

China

  • Inbound travel to China has also been slow to recover. The strict COVID-19 restrictions and subsequent slow reopening have impacted inbound tourism. However, with the easing of these restrictions, there has been a gradual increase in the number of international visitors

Implications for Tourists and Tourism Businesses

For Tourists:

  • Visa Regulations: Travelers need to stay updated on visa regulations and travel advisories. The evolving situation may impact travel plans, and understanding these can help avoid inconveniences.
  • Health and Safety: With changing health guidelines, tourists should ensure they are compliant with the latest health and safety protocols of their destination country.

For Tourism Businesses:

  • Market Adaptation: Tourism businesses need to adapt to the fluctuating travel trends. This involves being flexible with booking policies and offering attractive packages to entice travelers.
  • Sustainability: Emphasizing sustainable travel practices can appeal to the growing number of eco-conscious travelers. This includes promoting eco-friendly accommodations and responsible tourism practices.
  • Digital Presence: Enhancing digital presence and providing virtual tours can help attract potential tourists planning their trips.

By staying informed and adaptable, both tourists and tourism businesses can navigate the challenges and opportunities in the evolving landscape of international travel between the US and China.

Chinese diplomat, Mao Ning stated that China “strongly opposes exclusive blocks in Asia-Pacific,” emphasizing the country’s stance against forming selective alliances or groups within the region.
