Discover the Unparalleled Spirit of Obeah Opera in its South African Debut This August

Obeah Opera, the hand-clapping, foot-stomping, spirit-lifting, magical musical sensation, is excited to announce its international premiere tour in South Africa this August, celebrating Women’s Month. This profound and uplifting production will grace the stages of Soweto Theatre, Performing Arts Centre Of The Free State (PACOFS), and the South Africa State Theatre, marking the first ever Canadian original production in South Africa and the first-ever co-production collaboration among these iconic venues, delivering a vibrant and unique cultural experience nationwide.

Obeah Opera is an innovative musical that revisits the 1692 Salem witch trials in America from the viewpoint of Caribbean enslaved women. Conceived and scored by Nicole Brooks, this all-female a cappella show blends rich harmonies with complex rhythms, offering an enthralling and profoundly emotional experience. The opera’s unique storytelling, enriched with Caribbean folklore and spirituality, has earned widespread praise for its groundbreaking approach and riveting performances.

The timing of the tour during South Africa’s Women’s Month is notably poignant, as Obeah Opera underscores themes of female empowerment, resilience, and solidarity. This tribute to women’s voices is perfectly in sync with the essence of Women’s Month, celebrating the achievements and fortitude of women both historically and in contemporary times.

Audiences are in for a spellbinding performance that transcends conventional opera, moving beyond its European classical roots to embrace a diverse mix of musical styles predominantly found in ‘Black’ music, including spirituals, blues, jazz, gospel, traditional African, Caribbean Folk, Calypso, ska, R&B, and reggae. Obeah Opera offers an immersive experience with vibrant a cappella vocals, elaborate choreography, and a compelling story that appeals to diverse audiences. The show’s vitality and enchantment are sure to inspire and uplift, positioning it as a must-see event this August.

Tickets for the Obeah Opera International Premiere Tour will be available starting mid-June 2024.

After years of development, Asah Productions in partnership with MyArts International is delighted to bring this Canadian original opera to life, showcasing a gifted cast including South Africa’s own Tu Nokwe. The production team is dedicated to providing a high-quality, memorable experience that celebrates cultural diversity and female empowerment.

Celebrate Women’s Month with the unforgettable Obeah Opera, and be part of a cultural exploration that celebrates the strength and spirit of women through the power of music and storytelling.
