Overtourism protestors plan to ‘occupy the beaches’

More overtourism protests could hit Mallorca this weekend.

The group Mallorca Platja Tour is drumming up support on social media to ‘storm the beaches’ this weekend.

The latest protest against tourist overcrowding could see residents pack the beaches to show their support for measures to curb overtourism.

“We call on all residents near beaches to make a stand, recover our beaches and enjoy them as we did before,” the group wrote in one social media message.

The group says it will be preparation for a big demonstration planned on Sunday, June 16.

Last weekend, 10,000 people protested through the streets of Palma seeking urgent action against the lack of affordable housing, high costs and environmental degradation which is blamed primarily on the overheated tourism market.

Protests also recently took place in Ibiza.
