Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) plans to invest £9 million in new energy-efficient Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) systems at Kirkwall and Inverness airports.
Around £5 million is being invested at Kirkwall and £4 million will fund the work at Inverness.
It is part of its ongoing energy-efficient programme to make airport infrastructure more sustainable.
Following open tender processes, contractor GMR Henderson have been awarded the contract to carry out the work at Kirkwall.
G&A Barnie was selected for the project at Inverness.
The AGL system provides visual guidance to pilots during landing, taxiing and take-off in darkness and when visibility is limited to weather conditions.
The new lighting will ensure they remain compliant with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirements.
The lighting systems also reduce energy consumption by up to 80%.
The work timetable has been planned to make sure there is no impact on flights with minimal disturbance at the airports.
Work is set to begin in April and will continue through to mid-September at Inverness, with Kirkwall due to be completed in October.
Graeme Bell, Inverness Airport GM, said: “The new lighting represents a significant modernisation of our airfield lighting system and will contribute to decreased maintenance schedules.”
“At the same time, it reduces the airport’s environmental footprint.
