Luxury Cruise Liner docks at Mombasa port

Over the weekend, the Port of Mombasa welcomed the MSC Poesia, a luxury cruise liner operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, marking a significant event for the region. The Keya Ports Authority disclosed that the vessel arrived with a diverse group of 2,500 passengers from various countries and was manned by a crew of 1,000, including 20 Kenyans, showcasing the international appeal and operational scale of the cruise.

The MSC Poesia, with its impressive length of 294 metres, was highlighted by the authority as one of the largest cruise ships to dock at the port, signifying the port’s capability to accommodate vessels of such magnitude. The Kenya Ports Authority has emphasized its commitment to enhancing cruise tourism by investing in necessary infrastructure, such as the advanced cruise terminal, reinforcing Kenya’s position as a pivotal maritime and tourist hub in Africa.

This arrival follows the docking of the Norwegian Dawn, another esteemed luxury cruise liner, which made its journey from the Seychelles to Mombasa last month. Marking the first cruise ship arrival of 2024, the Norwegian Dawn brought 2,300 passengers and 1,100 crew members to the port, matching the MSC Poesia in length and further establishing Mombasa as a desirable destination for cruise ships.

The presence of KPA Director General Captain William Ruto, alongside other officials, at the reception of the tourists, where they were presented with caps, underscores the warm hospitality and preparedness of the Port of Mombasa to welcome international visitors.

The docking of such cruise liners not only highlights the port’s operational capabilities but also serves as a boon for tourism in Kenya, potentially driving increased visitor numbers and fostering economic benefits through tourism and related services.
