African Hospitality Confidence Index 2024 highlights key trends on sustainable future

As preparations unfold for the seventh edition of the Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa scheduled for June, the Confidence Index emerges as a cornerstone, providing a comprehensive insight into the industry’s dynamics. This year’s survey, conducted by dmg events, Moore Global, and Kaoun, marks a significant expansion, capturing the perspectives of 537 respondents from 30 African countries, a notable increase from the 315 respondents in 2023.

One of the notable enhancements this year is the inclusion of suppliers among the respondents, adding a diverse range of perspectives to the report. This expansion enriches the analysis, offering a more holistic view of the industry landscape.

The African Hospitality Confidence Index 2024 brings forth several key highlights that underscore the industry’s trajectory:

Industry Growth and Recovery: Post-pandemic, numerous businesses have demonstrated resilience and embarked on a trajectory of growth. This phase is characterized by technological advancements, improved access to finance, and a concerted effort towards talent development.

Digital Transformation and AI: There is a pronounced commitment within the industry towards accelerating digital transformation, with a specific emphasis on leveraging AI for tasks such as revenue management, energy optimization, and security enhancement. Approximately one-quarter of businesses are actively employing AI tools to streamline operations.

Tourism Resilience: The data from the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer indicates a notable 43% increase in international tourist arrivals between January and July 2023 compared to the corresponding period in 2022. Africa, positioned as the second-fastest-growing economic region, plays a pivotal role in driving this positive trend.

‘Bleisure’ Tourism: The report underscores the growing significance of ‘bleisure’ tourism, where business and leisure travel intersect. An overwhelming 92% of respondents acknowledge its importance, reflecting shifting travel patterns and an increasing emphasis on achieving work-life balance. Projections suggest that the global ‘bleisure’ market could double to $731.4 billion by 2032.

ESG Measures: While 89% of respondents recognize the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives for long-term success, there is a consensus that more concerted efforts are necessary. Those implementing ESG measures report tangible benefits, including enhanced customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The African Hospitality Confidence Index 2024 provides a nuanced understanding of the industry’s evolution, highlighting key trends and areas of focus as it navigates towards a resilient and sustainable future.
