ACI Europe releases airport guidance for passengers with hidden disabilities

Airports association ACI Europe has released its ‘first-ever’ guidance for airports to assist passengers with non-visible disabilities. Privacy Policy.

The 48-page guide is premised as a tool to support airports “in gaining deeper understanding of the potential range of non-visible disabilities and the associated barriers to travel”.

The guide addresses pre-travel information and booking assistance, on-site facilities and overwhelming stimuli, process recommendations for security, check-in and boarding and staff training.

It also outlines how best to navigate the processing of sensitive information regarding passenger needs and expectations and includes several case studies from Athens International Airport, Dublin Airport, London Gatwick and Manchester Airport.

“Travel is a fundamental right for all, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that airports across Europe remain accessible to everyone,” said ACI Europe director general, Olivier Jankovec.

“This document serves as a guiding light for airport managing bodies and their stakeholders, offering practical guidance on how to assist passengers with non-visible disabilities in an empathetic and respectful manner. Together, we can make air travel more inclusive, ensuring that every passenger's journey is marked by dignity, respect, and equal access to the wonders of our world,” he added.

The move comes amid a growing awareness to make business travel more accessible and inclusive, and follows the recent release of data from IATA that reveals an increased demand for special assistance at airports.
