According to new data from the British Transport Police, incidents reached a record high of 7,899 thefts in 2022, compared to 3,609 in 2021.
The Central line tops the list of London’s worst-hit tube lines, reporting over 1,200 pickpocket thefts last year. The Northern line follows closely with more than 1,100 thefts. Disturbingly, the figures indicate a concerning trend as levels of train-related theft exceed pre-pandemic rates, with 50% of robberies occurring on trains, 23% on platforms, and 7% at station entrances and exits.
Friday emerges as the most common day for offenses, while Thursdays see the fewest thefts. Pickpocketing incidents are a significant concern for Christmas travellers, and the latest data reveals specific London boroughs experiencing heightened incidents:
Westminster – 20,871 incidents
Camden – 5,301 incidents
Southwark – 4,287 incidents
Kensington & Chelsea – 2,962 incidents
Islington – 2,820 incidents
Hackney – 3,160 incidents
Lambeth – 2,591 incidents
Haringey – 1,894 incidents
Westminster is particularly targeted, with over 20,000 incidents in the past year, triple the number in Camden, which ranks second, and Southwark in third place.
Nick Titchener, a criminal defense solicitor at Lawtons Solicitors, emphasises the need for vigilance, stating, “It’s important to ensure you’re not a target for opportunistic thieves when swept up in the crowds. Keep an eye on your bags and any other valuables and be vigilant around other passengers.”
Titchener advises victims to contact the police promptly, emphasising the critical first hour after the incident for catching suspects. Reporting the incident and canceling cards promptly can aid in such circumstances.
Metropolitan Police offer practical tips to avoid falling victim to pickpocket theft:
- Keep purses and bags closed and secure at all times
- Carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest
- Quickly return cards to your purse or wallet and secure it
- Use a purse with a secure closure
- Consider using a money belt for significant cash
- Maintain a separate list of contact numbers
- Keep photocopies of essential documents in a secure place
As London anticipates an influx of tourists during the holiday season, staying alert and adopting preventative measures becomes crucial in safeguarding against thefts
