Lisbon imposes cruise ship tax

The Port of Lisbon is set to impose a cruise ship tax on all guests from 2024.

A €2 tourist tax for each passenger will be payable as of January 2024, the Port of Lisbon Authority says.

Cruise lines will be responsible for disbursing the payment via the Janela Única Logística platform.

The Port Authority said it is still working out procedure for tax payments with the Lisbon City Council.

It forecasts annual cruise tax revenue of about €1.2 million.

The Port Authority first announced to CLIA plans for a per-passenger cruise tax several months ago.

Lisbon’s mayor recently slammed cruise lines’ opposition to the tax.

“It is truly shameful that there is such great resistance on the part of operators to pay this tourist tax,” said Carlos Moedas.

He threatened cruise ship restrictions if they kept up criticism of the plan.

“As of January, I have already announced that if they don’t do it, I will make entry somewhat difficult.”

“I can hinder the mobility of the buses themselves and I will do so if they don’t pay.”
