American travelers more cautious about holiday travel spending

The latest American Travel Sentiment Study shows travel demand this winter remaining extremely high.

However, there is a sudden rise of caution to spending on holiday travel ahead of Christmas and New Year.

In Wave 80 of the ongoing monthly Longwoods International study, travelers were asked about their holiday season travel and spending plans.

It finds a 5% decline in the number of people planning to spend more on holiday travel this season.

Similarly, the percentage of travelers now planning to spend less this year than last has increased seven points from 16% in September to 23% in November.

Still, three-quarters still plan to take holiday trips this season.

Of those traveling over the holidays, 63% will travel by car and 27% by plane.

Travel is still a priority for most, reinforced by a near-record 91% of American travelers indicating plans to go somewhere in the next six months.
