Korean Air inducts first Pratt & Whitney GTF engine

Korean Air’s MRO division has inducted its first Pratt & Whitney GTF (Geared Turbofan) engine since the airline joined the Pratt & Whitney GTF MRO network in 2021. Korean Air’s MRO team will provide full disassembly, assembly and testing for the PW1100G-JM engine, the model that powers the Airbus A320neo family aircraft.

The airline held an event on October 12 at its in-house engine maintenance center in Bucheon to celebrate the occasion. The event was attended by Keehong Woo, President, Korean Air; Jong Seok (Jason) Yoo, Executive Vice President and Chief Safety & Operating Officer, Korean Air; and Yogesh Farswani, Regional Vice President Asia-Pacific Customer Business, Pratt & Whitney.

“We are expanding our MRO technologies and capabilities with the newest and most advanced engine technologies with the first induction of the GTF engine,” said Mr. Jong Seok (Jason) Yoo, Executive Vice President and Chief Safety & Operating Officer at Korean Air. “With this operational milestone, we are ready to support not only customers in our own region, but those from around the world.”

Korean Air expects MRO orders for more than 100 next-gen GTF engines from overseas airlines every year, and has been investing heavily to meet rising GTF MRO demand.

Over the past three years, the airline has invested in new equipment, conducted advanced MRO engineer training, and secured necessary approvals from domestic and overseas aviation authorities. The airline is also building a mega-scale maintenance facility in Incheon, which will feature the latest technology and equipment.

With the GTF Engine MRO program, Korean Air plans to further solidify its position as a professional engine MRO through stronger cooperation with its aerospace partners.

“Pratt & Whitney remains steadfast in its commitment to collaborating with industry-leading MRO providers around the globe,” said Marc Meredith, vice president of aftermarket for GTF engines at Pratt & Whitney. “Korean Air brings more than 40 years of advanced maintenance experience to the network and we’re confident they will deliver the level of service we expect.”
