Silver Nova will depart on her maiden voyage on August 14, sailing roundtrip from Venice, taking in many of the Adriatic’s most iconic destinations over seven days, including Piran in Slovenia; Zadar, Dubrovnik, Split, and Rovinj in Croatia; and Kotor in Montenegro. As well as representing an important milestone on Royal Caribbean Group’s journey to Destination Net Zero, Silver Nova and future Nova-class ships are set to introduce an unparalleled openness to the world and an entirely new take on luxury at sea.
Captain Cosimo Pontillo – Master
Known affectionately as Mino, Captain Cosimo Pontillo’s maritime journey began in the picturesque village of Scilla along the Messina Straits. He embarked on his nautical education at the Messina Nautical High School, graduating in 1983. A year in the Navy aboard frigates followed, during which he delved into submarine rescue techniques for six months. Transitioning to the cargo vessel domain, Pontillo’s career trajectory soared. His ascent was rapid, obtaining his Masters License in no time. Venturing into the cruise industry, he contributed his expertise to several cruise lines before charting his course with Silversea Cruises in 1994. He was an integral part of the launches of Silver Cloud® and Silver Wind®, and his ascendancy within the ranks culminated in his appointment as Staff Captain. In 2000, Captain Pontillo served as a pilot in Messina for six years, after which he rejoined Silversea as a Captain. With a wealth of experience, he has helmed various ships, including expedition vessels. His crowning achievement includes overseeing the launch of Silver Nova, infusing the project with his technical acumen and vast experience.
Lester Woodfall – Hotel Director
Lester Woodfall’s journey began in Southern India, where he honed his hospitality skills and completed his apprenticeship in luxury hotels. His international odyssey commenced in Bahrain, gracing several five-star hotels before transitioning to the cruise industry in 2001. Ascending the ranks, Woodfall mastered the nuances of his craft and ascended to the role of Food & Beverage Manager. With a wealth of expertise, he’s now at the helm of Silver Nova as Hotel Director for her maiden season. Leading a multifaceted team spanning departments like food & beverage, housekeeping, shore excursions, and entertainment, Woodfall is poised to elevate the onboard experience. His keen sense of service and leadership prowess promises an exceptional voyage aboard Silver Nova.
Vicki Van Tassel – Cruise Director
Vicki Van Tassel’s illustrious career spans show business in its various dimensions, from Broadway to television shows and motion capture work. In 2011, she embarked on a maritime chapter with Silversea, lending her vocal talents to three World Cruises and numerous Grand Voyages. Her journey continued in 2015 when she assumed the role of Cruise Director, overseeing a variety of Silversea’s ships, including Silver Moon℠ and Silver Dawn℠. Having hosted guests on the World Cruise 2023, she now embraces the esteemed position of Cruise Director for Silver Nova’s inaugural voyage. With immense pride, Van Tassel eagerly anticipates welcoming guests aboard the latest addition to the Silversea fleet.
