Iberia Launches the Third Edition of Its Cadet Programme

  • The airline already hired 19 pilots from this programme, which offers financing for 50% of the cost of training at FTE Jerez
  • Now 16 cadets will be selected and will begin their training in the last quarter of 2023
  • With this initiative, Iberia seeks to have the most qualified professionals participating in its training and, at the same time, to promote the pilot profession by helping to finance their studies
  • In 2023, Iberia already hired more than 100 new pilots and has just opened a new call for technical crew members with Airbus-type ratings and 150 hours of flight experience

At a time when many young people are thinking about their education and training for the next academic year and their professional future, today Iberia launched the third edition of its cadet programme in collaboration with the Flight Training Europe (FTE) school in Jerez.

Until July 21st, those interested in training to become pilots may submit their application at www.ftejerez.com/iberia, where they can also find out about the requirements and conditions of this Iberia programme, whose objective is to select the most qualified professionals participating in its training and, at the same time, to promote the pilot profession by helping with the financial costs.

“We are very excited about the launch of this third edition of Iberia cadets, a sign that the programme is yielding good results for both the candidates and the airline and, above all, that we are in a time of high demand for these professionals in the aviation sector. In this context, Iberia's ambition is to always employ the most qualified pilots with the best skills, and the cadet programme allows us to financially support the candidates' careers and monitor their training, in accordance with the future needs of the airline”, said Rafael Jiménez-Hoyos, Director of Production at Iberia

The Iberia Cadetes programme also promotes the profession of pilot among young people, helping them finance their training under very advantageous conditions so that they can develop their vocation.

Once the Iberia-FTE Jerez cadet training programme is completed, Iberia's focus is to facilitate, to the extent that the required conditions are met, the incorporation of these cadets into the labour market through the airlines of the Iberia Group, so that they can also start to return Iberia's contribution to their training.

Iberia already took on 19 pilots from the two previous editions of the programme. Now 16 candidates will be selected and are expected to begin their training in the last quarter of 2023.

According to Óscar Sordo, CEO at FTEJerez, “We are proud that Iberia continues to trust FTEJerez to train its next generation of pilots. Without a doubt, this new call is not only a recognition of the success of the Iberia Cadetes programme, which we launched for the first time in 2017, but also confirms the recovery of the sector after the pandemic and highlights the bright future of the sector”.

Between Iberia and FTEJerez the two companies jointly select the candidates to join a training programme that will allow them to obtain the ATPL air transport license, and 50% of which will be financed interest-free by Iberia. The airline also participates in the training of these students, assessing their progress and performance.

More than 100 New Pilots and a New Edition

So far this year, Iberia already hired more than 100 new pilots to cover the growth that the airline is experiencing in all its markets and to renew the group’s workforce.

In addition, the airline has just launched a new call for technical crew members with Airbus type ratings (A320, A330, A340, A350 or A380), who have a minimum of 150 hours’ flight experience in an Airbus Fly by Wire type aircraft. This call will be open until 31 July 2023 and all the requirements can be found here:
