Malta registers over 158,000 outbound tourists in first quarter of the year

 According to statistics released by Malta’s National Statistics Office (NSO), the total number of outbound tourists for the first quarter of 2023 reached an estimated 158,180. Among these, 90,851 trips were taken for holiday purposes, while 43,664 trips were made to visit friends and relatives.

The majority of outbound tourists fell within the 25 to 44 age group, accounting for 52.5% of the total. Following closely were individuals aged between 45 and 64, making up 27.5% of the outbound tourist demographic. Italy remained the most favored destination, attracting 35.4% of all tourist trips.

In terms of nights spent abroad, the NSO reported a total of 1,082,039. Of these, 54.9% were spent in non-rented accommodation establishments. On average, outbound tourists stayed for 6.8 nights.

The total expenditure of outbound tourists during the January to March period exceeded €131.6 million, averaging around €832 per person. These figures indicate a significant contribution to the economies of the destinations visited by Maltese travelers.

The NSO’s statistics shed light on the travel patterns and preferences of Maltese tourists, with a significant emphasis on holiday trips and visiting friends and relatives. The data also underscores the popularity of Italy as a favored destination among outbound travelers.
