Dubai has experienced significant growth in its tourism sector, welcoming 4.67 million international overnight visitors in the first quarter of 2023, compared to 3.97 million tourists during the same period in 2022. This marks a 17% year-on-year growth and represents the city’s best Q1 performance since the pandemic began. The data, published by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, positions Dubai as the fastest-recovering destination globally, with tourism volumes reaching 98% of pre-pandemic levels in Q1 2023.
The strong rebound in the tourism sector contributes to Dubai’s goal of consolidating its status as one of the world’s top three cities, as outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The city’s success in attracting international visitors is attributed to its far-reaching vision and ongoing initiatives to transform Dubai into a leading global hub for travel, talent, entrepreneurship, and investment.
Dubai’s traditional source markets, such as the GCC, MENA, Western Europe, and South Asia, have contributed significantly to the tourism volumes, showcasing the success of the city’s diversified multi-geographic strategy. The hotel sector has also thrived, with an average occupancy rate of 83% in Q1 2023, nearly reaching pre-pandemic levels. Dubai’s hotel inventory has increased by 26%, reflecting continued investment in the sector.
Looking ahead, Dubai plans to enhance sustainability, gastronomy, trade, and technology to further boost its tourism industry. The city aims to offer unique experiences to global travelers and develop innovative tourism products. Dubai’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by hosting COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference, and initiatives like the Dubai Can campaign, which promotes the use of reusable bottles. The Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan will drive expansion and diversity of tourism attractions, catering to residents and visitors alike.
Through reforms and regulatory enablers, including various visa initiatives, Dubai has strengthened its position as a global liveability hub. The city’s pro-business environment and quality education offerings have also attracted multinational companies, entrepreneurs, investors, and global talent.
With its remarkable growth in the first quarter of 2023 and ongoing initiatives, Dubai is firmly on track to become the most visited international destination and achieve its vision of becoming the world’s best place to live, visit, work, and invest in.
