Tourism retrieves in major North African city destinations

The WTTC has brought in a report that exhibited optimistic signs of retrieval for the travel & tourism segment in primary North African city destinations, bringing a huge improvement to economies throughout the region.

The report, explored in association with Oxford Economics, examined major pointers like travel & tourism’s impact on GDP, work and traveller expenditure.

The study of Cairo, Tunis and Marrakech shows that in all the three cities, the direct influence on GDP from the sector, jobs in travel and tourism, and visitor expenditure are all getting back to the standards before the pandemic.

The WTTC report reveals that in 2019, the travel & tourism segment added more than $5.6BN to Cairo’s economy, which is above $1BN to Marrakech’s and $1.2BN to Tunis’s.

However, the pandemic at that point brought a destructive outcome on economies across North Africa with boundaries shutting down for visitors from abroad.

Persistent border shutdowns in source markets like Germany the UK and Italy hindered the comeback of visitors from these countries, creating a considerable influence on travel and tourism’s GDP across North Africa because of lesser number of visitors.

In 2020, in all three cities, travel & tourism’s GDP input declined by over half, dropping to $1.95BN in Cairo, $450MN in Tunis and $497MN in Marrakech.

In the last two years, with lifting of international travel rules, all three cities have seen retrievals.
