DB installs climate-friendly lighting at 1,000 train stations

Throughout 2022, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has been converting the lighting at around 1,000 train stations to energy-efficient sources such as LEDs.

So far, service technicians have installed thousands of new LEDs at around 750 stations, replacing platform lights, signs and displays.

Alongside improving its sustainability credentials, this project is also helping the company to save on electricity costs at its stations.

Bernd Koch, CEO of DB Station & Service AG said that this year, they are once again taking a big step forward when it comes to energy-saving lighting.

By the end of the year, almost half of our train stations will have energy-efficient lighting. At every station that they build or renovate, they always use climate-friendly LED technology.

This saves both electricity and CO2. And it shows once again that they are not only climate-friendly on the rails, but also in their stations.

By the end of 2022, 1,000 stations will join around 1,600 DB stations that have already gained energy-efficient alternatives to conventional lighting in the last 5 years.

These sources are expected to last much longer than conventional lighting and will save DB around five gigawatt hours of electricity per year.

DB has previously optimised the lighting at most of its large stations and is now focussing on smaller facilities.
