Business events campaign fulfilling PCDS 2030 goals

Sarawak’s business events campaign, Tribe Legacy Sarawak, is on the right track in supporting Sarawak’s economic, social and environmental agendas outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy, PCDS 2030.

In 2020, the Sarawak Government declared business events as a contributing sector to achieve PCDS’ goals of economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability. Consequently, Tribe Legacy Sarawak was launched by BESarawak as an enabling platform to fulfil these goals by stimulating national and global cross-sector collaborations in the context of business events and intensifying marketing efforts.

Between 2020 and 2022 under the campaign, Sarawak secured 145 events with a total economic impact of RM385.5 million, RM209.5 million in direct delegate expenditure, RM23.1 million in tax revenue and 30,594 job opportunities. According to the legacy impact assessments of these events, 819 impacts were recorded under the Legacy Impact Pillars, PCDS’ 6 economic sectors and 7 enablers, and UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In terms of industry development, 78 partners now carry international industry qualifications while 38 partner organisations carry the Travel Safe Alliance Malaysia certification. This is achieving PCDS’ goal of an agile workforce that can excel globally in addition to BESarawak’s goal of developing a strong and professional industry.

Meanwhile, another major development from Tribe Legacy Sarawak is the launch of the state-level corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme Books Build Legacy. The CSR’s objective is to have business event planners adopt the programme and donate books in aid of making education accessible in rural areas. The CSR is fulfilling PCDS’ strategic thrust of social inclusivity and optimising human capital, and UN SDG’s goal of quality education and no poverty

Earlier this year, the industry initiated the world’s first academic journal on business events and legacies, International Journal of Business Events and Legacies. The journal is in line with PCDS’ strategic thrust of optimising human capital and creating a competitive economy and BESarawak’s advocacy of legacy impact. The soft launch will take place on 1 November 2022 and the official launch on 30 November 2022.

“Collaborations have been the foundation of strength and success for Sarawak’s business events sector since launching the campaign,” said Amelia Roziman, BESarawak’s CEO. “Strong campaign initiatives paired with a well-prepared industry are attracting more collaborators and major global events to our shores. We look forward to the next 3 years of our 5-year Tribe Legacy Sarawak campaign.”

Other announcements made during Tribal Gathering Kuching were Sarawak’s wins of five international marketing awards, including two Silver Awards at the Hollywood Gold Awards and Milan Gold Awards.
