International tourist arrivals in Indonesia hit 1.2 million

The foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia for the first seven months of this year have reached 1.2 million, driven by the implementation of the visa on arrival (VOA) scheme.

The tourist arrivals in July rose to 476,970 from June’s 345,438, mainly from Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and the United States, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

The holiday island of Bali, the biggest beneficiary of the scheme, received 246,504 tourist visits in July, hitting a new record since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic with almost 9,000 tourists per day, the ministry said.

Currently, citizens from 75 countries can get VOA including visitors from Maldives, Monaco, and Colombia, its Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said in a statement.

Indonesia, the largest archipelagic country comprising over 17,000 islands, aims to attract up to 3.6 million foreign tourists this year.

The recent Economic Impact report from the World Travel and Tourism Council shows that the travel and tourism sector of Indonesia is hoped to generate over five million new jobs in the next decade.

Indonesia’s travel and tourism sector, in the next 10 years, is hoped to get expanded at an average annual rate of 10%. It’s twice the rate of the economy in general, which is anticipated to grow by 5.1%.

The contribution of tourism to GDP of Indonesia will reach almost US$118.4 billion. It would inject into the economy an additional US$72.9 billion and will account for 5.7% of the total economy.

Also, predictions are divulged that the travel and tourism sector is hoped to create over 500,000 new job opportunities every year each in the next decade. If it does, in tourism, it would reach more than 16 million employees by 2032.

The sector’s contribution to GDP, by the end of 2022 is hoped to increase by 57.2%. It would reach US$45.5 billion or 3.6% of total economic GDP, though tourism employment is only expected to grow by 2.1%. %, and reach 11.2 million jobs.
