International tourism revenue in Mexico increases

Between January and July, international tourists and visitors spent around US $16.5 billion in Mexico. It is an enhancement of almost 65% compared to the equivalent period of 2021, said Mexico Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco.

Only over 36.8 million tourists and visitors (for example, day trippers and cruise ship passengers) spent $16.48 billion in Mexico during the first seven months of 2022.

The fiscal number is 64.6% higher compared to the same period of last year and 8.3% over 2019 when the tourism sector was not impacted by the corona virus pandemic. Last month, spending by foreigners totaled $2.67 billion, marking a 21% boost compared to July 2021.

Torruco said that just below 21.7 million global tourists visited Mexico between January and July, which is a 25.5% increase compared to the similar period last year. However, it is a 17.3% drop compared to 2019.

Torruco stressed on the increase in tourism income, and said that Mexico is on the right path toward recovery.

The Mexican tourism minister said that more than 2 million Mexicans will travel within the country this imminent Independence Day long weekend, bringing in an expected 29.6 billion pesos (US $1.5 billion).

Hotel occupancy of 60% or more is likely in several destinations counting in Acapulco, Mexico City, Los Cabos, Cancún and Puerto Vallarta.
