Bowers challenges uniformity

Bradley L Bowers, the latest creative to join Wolf-Gordon’s roster of Curated Collection designers, has developed four new patterns on behalf of the half-century-old surface design company. CHROMALIS by Bradley L Bowers is an exploration of color, shape and movement, imparting the influence of optical illusions and dimension on three upholstery textiles and one wallcovering. CHROMALIS is produced via digital modeling software and creatively influenced by a variety of Bowers’ personal interests, including art, gardening and physics.

“Bradley has a stunning sense of color. In combination with his organic, optical and, sometimes, mysterious patterning, we feel we are offering the contract market a truly exciting new series of options in Chromalis,” said Marybeth Shaw, chief creative officer, marketing & design.

“While developing Chromalis, I explored color as the equalizer that creates perspective within a space, allowing pattern to add differentiation. I like to challenge the need for uniformity within patterning while still understanding the importance of balancing a design,” said Bowers, artist and designer.

Wallcovering

Borealis, the series’ sole wallcovering, is a gradient pattern inspired by the spectacular color and light phenomenon, the Aurora Borealis. Large in scale and design, the pattern is defined by its subtle variations in color and sky-high vertical strokes. Like the Aurora Borealis, each colorway represents the ever-changing nature of life.

Textiles
Graffito, an upholstery textile, is a fusion between impressionism and street art. Two unlikely art forms come together to combine layers of brushstrokes with the purity and intensity of spray paint. Outlines and intentional marks morph into figures that can be found throughout the pattern.

Phantom, an upholstery textile, is inspired by moiré effects. Bowers programmed algorithms to generate intersecting linework that creates the illusion of shape and depth from myriad angles.

Fauna, an upholstery textile, is inspired by aerial shots of a landscape. As in all his designs, Bowers challenged the need for uniformity within this pattern. Taking a piece of paper or a mound of clay, the designer was able to image a landscape by manipulating each medium. The pattern was transformed through changes to perspective and geometry.

Upholstery textiles in the CHROMALIS series are realized on high-performing Supreen fabrics. Supreen is a revolutionary construction that combines cutting-edge woven and coated technologies to create a unique PVC-Free liquid-barrier textile. The result is a hard-working upholstery fabric with a luxurious look and a surprisingly supple hand.

Curated Collection
The Curated Collection allows interior design specifiers to incorporate distinctive imagery from a select group of artists, with the added flexibility of various modification options including size, scale, coloring and even printing substrate. Curated Collection digital wallcoverings become feature walls in interiors, rendering projects unique and site-specific—whether behind a headboard or reception desk, in a customer waiting area, restaurant or an office space. Working closely with WG Customs Lab, designers can choose from a variety of substrates, including embossed vinyl and PVC-free textured wallcoverings, Mylar finishes, felt and textile materials, acrylic panels, window films, as well as Wolf-Gordon’s RAMPART wall protection for high-impact areas.
