In NW China, ecological protection improves rural tourism

This summer, Ma Bingfeng has been quite busy, remaining functional at a hostel in the form of a conventional cave-dwelling, in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of the Liupanshan Mountain area. Employed as a, kitchen helper, cleaner and waitress, Ma Bingfeng has been happy about the enhancement to her income.

Ma said that during the peak travel season in the summers, she works for the hostel close to her home. Every month, she earns 2,400 yuan, more than she earned from the field crops every year in the past.

Since the Xihaigu area in central and southern Ningxia was raised out of paucity, Pengyang and close by counties have experienced a boom in rural tourism.

Chen Zhenneng said that rural tourism is an important financial development program in Pengyang. Pengyang County is rich in terms of waterfalls and terraced fields. Furthermore, the county has many revolutionary sites.

Near the hostel, the main tourist attraction where Ma works is a terraced-field park. It’s listed in national tourism pamphlets because of its exceptional panorama of terraced fields.

The place was called by the locals as “the head of a monk” as it was desolate and “a waterless ditch” as the place was so dry. In this area, for years, soil erosion and water scarcity were the prime problems that impacted the daily lives of the locals. In recent years however, all of this has changed completely.
