First onshore power connection facility in Stockholm Port

Ports of Stockholm is testing the environment for building the onshore power connection. The building of an onshore power connection facility for the cruise ship at two city centre quays. This environmental initiative is likely causing significantly lower air pollution emissions in Stockholm and the Baltic Sea.

The initiative began in World Water Week 2022, which also marked the beginning of the powerhouse building. The building of the facilities at Stadsgården quay berths 160 and 169 makes the first port in Sweden that offers an onshore power connection.

Joakim Larsson, City Commissioner responsible for Ports of Stockholm has stated that they are taking a huge step towards being an international class sustainable cruise destination. The onshore power connection for cruise ships is a joint project where Ports of Stockholm is an important part of in partnership with baltic Sea Ports. This powerhouse will be at the centre of the city.

The project will result in significantly lower emissions of carbon dioxide and air pollutant particles from the cruise ships in Stockholm and the Baltic Sea area. Ports of Stockholm are working with ports of Copenhagen, Helsinki and Aarhus to enable the cruise ships and shipping companies to connect with the common international standard that is situated at different powerhouses.

Thomas Andersson who is the CEO of Ports of Stockholm said that they felt really good regarding the new endeavour. As this is the first-ever onshore powerhouse in Sweden, it is likely that it will turn the current scenario in a very different direction. The project is also likely to generate at least 1000 jobs in the same region. At least 6000 tonnes of greenhouse gas reduction can be noticed each year.

About 45 percent of the cruise ship calls will be able to connect to the onshore power when facilities are in place. The Stockholm port is one of the most popular ports that saw a 656000 cruise passengers and additional 240000 crew members, in 2019.
