Today, 16 Mar. 2022 the International Trade Administration’s National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) is pleased to announce the release of the Survey of International Air Travelers (SIAT) Outbound Monitor.
This monitor provides users a spectrum of statistics on international visitation of U.S. residents to foreign overseas destinations. With this new tool, businesses engaged in international operations (airlines, airports, lodging, etc.) can more effectively measure U.S. travel demand across the globe, while government tourism offices can better analyze U.S. travel to destinations outside the United States.
The SIAT Outbound Survey Monitor (Monitor) is a data visualization tool based on the Survey of International Air Travelers which enables users to interactively analyze the characteristics of U.S. visitors at the national, state and metropolitan statistical area (MSA) level to world regions or countries. This includes data on passenger trip planning, travel patterns, demographics, spending, and income. The Monitor includes annual data from 2012 to 2020, with 2021 data to be added later this year.
Exploring the Monitor allows data users to identify some interesting findings about U.S. international travelers at the national and local scale. For example:
- The top 3 states that were the source of U.S. international travel to overseas destinations in 2020 were New York, California and Florida.
- The top 3 overseas destinations for U.S. travelers changed to the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas in 2020 from the United Kingdom, Italy and France in 2019.
- The Philippines was the top overseas destination for international travel emanating from California in 2020.
- The largest source market for U.S. trips to Jamaica in 2020 was the State of New York, followed by Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland.
