The study analysed the eco-credentials of thousands of hotels in the world’s 200 largest cities on Booking.com. Using the holiday site’s ‘sustainable’ filter, researchers discovered how many eco-conscious hotels are available in each place and then compared this to the total number of hotels listed to create a percentage score.
Vancouver has 89 hotels listed in total and nearly 44% of them have been recognised for their eco-credentials. A stand-out stay in the Canadian city is the five-star Fairmont Waterfront, a hotel famed for supporting its surrounding environment with its eco-efforts. The Fairmont Waterfront homes 250,000 honeybees, recycles and composts where possible, and encourages all event planners to use carbon-neutral alternatives.
Stockholm is the second city on the list - a city often celebrated for being eco-friendly - with 87 of its 216 hotels being awarded for their sustainability. The rest of the top five is dominated by Canadian cities; Toronto is third with nearly 25% of all hotels being recognised as sustainable. Calgary is fourth with over 23% eco-friendly options, and Edmonton is fifth with 22.56% of its hotels being sustainable.
Making up the rest of the top 10 is Lahore in Pakistan, in sixth, two Colombian cities take seventh and eighth place - going to Medellin and Bogota respectively. Ninth and tenth on the list are two South African cities; Ekurhuleni is ninth as a result of 19.46% of its hotels having green-approved practices, and Johannesburg completes the top 10.
