How Europe Is Getting Back To Travel

Like the rest of the world, Europe is making its way back from COVID-19 and that includes figuring out the what, why and how of getting economies and travel back on track.

A new survey by the European Travel Commission shows that over half of Europeans feel comfortable taking a plane again, while 66% intend to travel within the next 6 months.

According to a Eurobarometer survey, 65% of EU citizens agree that “the EU Digital COVID Certificate is the safest means for free travel in Europe.” And according to the European Commission’s new report, 591 million Digital COVID Certificates have been created in the EU since July 1, 2021. The overall figure consists of 437 million certificates for full vaccination, 144 test certificates, and 10 million recovery certificates.

Airlines for Europe (A4E), ACI Europe, EU Travel Tech, European Travel Commission, and others are calling for the EU to drop its “traffic light” system and put international travel of fully vaccinated passengers on an equal footing with intra-EU travel. The associations are also calling for an EU COVID Exit Plan for Travel and Tourism, including common criteria for when to discontinue the use of passenger locator forms and a harmonized approach to fully re-establish freedom of movement.

Recently, the European Parliament’s Transport committee held an exchange of views with authors of a six-part study on relaunching transport and tourism in the EU after COVID-19. The conversation focused on the aviation sector in particular, with the presenters emphasising the green transition and putting forward the recommendations on rebuilding passenger confidence, better supporting the sector and strengthening existing policies.
