Ει βούλει καλώς ακούειν, μάθε καλώς λέγειν, μαθών δε καλώς λέγειν, πειρώ καλώς πράττειν, και ούτω καρπώση το καλώς ακούειν. (Επίκτητος)

Greece after meeting tourism target is set to gear up for 2022

Amalia Delakis and her son Dimitris of Kriti Plus car rental in the last week of October finally succeeded to take a breather after experiencing quite a busy season. “Last year was a very difficult period and most of the small businesses didn’t know if they would survive,” Amalia told DW. “Basically, this year, everyone came at once: in July, August and September and into October. Most companies didn’t have enough cars to support the big influx of people all arriving at the same time.”

In the midst of the pandemic, the family was quite busy due the shilly-shally of the tourists’ to take public transportation and also the fact that many countries had kept their borders closed like Turkey, the USA and Thailand.

After a string of doubts about what might be the 2021 tourism season, Greece fared quite good than what was expected, particularly in the fall. And that was in spite of Greece witnessing wildfires in August which discouraged tourists from coming. During the months of July and August of 2021, the country welcomed more than two million visitors to its shores. September saw 75 percent of tourists who came in the same month in 2019; Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias told SKAI radio at the end of October. The government just met its target of having more than 50% of the tourists of 2019, according to statistics available at the time of writing.
