Tourism players in Cebu are all set to reopen the tourism industry of the province whether it’s through tourism bubbles or the entry of inoculated foreigners.
Alfred Reyes, the Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu (HRRAC) president, explained that he welcomed the initiative of Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia to connect Cebu via tourism bubbles along with the designs of Lapu-Lapu City Mayor, Junard Chan, of opening Cebu to foreign tourists.
To quote him, “I salute whatever initiative the governor has done for the province of Cebu, and Cebu itself by really opening the economy. Among all the governors we have here in the country, it’s only Governor Gwen who’s really fighting for the tourism industry.”
A travel bubble is a contract between two or more nations to open up their international borders for travel with no severe quarantine rules. Usually, they are done between governments who trust each other, and are confident that both sides are handling virus issue well.
According to Reyes, both initiatives are major assistance to the decaying hospitality sector. With the low cases of infection in Cebu, Reyes explained that initiatives in stimulating the tourism sector should be closely considered.
“We can really say, ‘Come to Cebu because it is really safe,’” he said.
Reyes stated that the continued single-digit cases of infection showed that the successful government as well as private sector approach in controlling the pandemic.
“The Cebuanos will take this opportunity to really follow the health protocols so that we can move and start reopening our economy. This is something we can be proud of as Cebuanos,” he said.
Also, the HRRAC official praised the effort of reopening the international borders for tourists that have been inoculated.
“This is also a baby step in reopening the economy. In fact, this is being done in some parts of Europe,” he said.
