Greece formally started its tourist season, declaring on Thursday a multimillion-euro promotional campaign targeted at saving its most crucial economic sector from a second summer lost to the virus attack.
“We are opening our tourist industry to the world,” Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis explained at an outdoor news conference organized in front of the impressive background of the Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion outside Athens.
Couple of promotional videos informing the anxious British office workers and others requiring a break that “All you want is Greece” will be shown in the main markets, boasting about the exotic beachline of the country, historical sites and tavernas.
The summer season will be very important for the opportunity of Greece in bringing its monetary condition out of the crisis of coronavirus in a manageable shape after experiencing an 8 percent drop in GDP in 2020 as the restrictions related to COVID-19 has stifled the vital tourist sector.
Tourists from the European Union along with Britain, the United States and Israel, can visit as long as they have been vaccinated or can produce negative COVID-19 test results.
The sector which accounts for about a fifth of Greek output and employs one in five workers has went through a steep dip on record last year, seeing revenues drop to 4 billion euros, less than a quarter of the 18 billion achieved in 2019.
Theoharis, back after a series of foreign visits to promote Greece, refused to set a target for tourist revenues, saying only “It will be better than last year”.
