Juliana Trail, a 270-kilometers hiking trail circuiting Mount Triglav, the highest peak of Slovenia, has been announced as the Best Europe Tourism Project by the British Guild of Travel Writers.
The trail is run by the Julian Alps Community. Its coordinator, Klemen Langus, has explained that he was happy that the project grabbed the recognition it deserved for its sustainable orientation and clear philosophy.
In 2018, the trail was introduced to decrease the visitor strain on Triglav. The 16-stage trail runs through villages. Visitors are encouraged to make use of the public transport facilities to access it.
Quoted in a press release from Tourism Bohinj, Langus stated that the award was a responsibility as well “to truly honour the commitment we made when we started the trail and the criteria it follows”.
“The trail runs through unknown corners and should affect many elements of local development in the Julian Alps: the negative demography, development of farming, public transport. It is designed to direct the visitors and thus protect the environment,” Langus said.
Elected by Rudolf Abraham, a BGTW member, in the Best Europe Tourism Project section, the trail was one of the six finalists competing for BGTW International Tourism Awards along with another Slovenian project, the Secret Rooms of Hotel Jama, Postojna. The winners were declared at an online event on 18 April.
On the local community, Juliana Trail is a first-rate instance of a tourism product that has a positive impact as well as on the environment, the release from Tourism Bohinj quoted BGTW chairman Simon Willmore as saying.
