The large swathes of the United Kingdom should prepare for more snow, with scattered showers expected on Thursday along with some sunshine. The wintry weather is set to continue after temperatures plunged to more than 20C below freezing overnight – the lowest reading recorded in the UK in more than two decades.
Braemar, Aberdeenshire saw the mercury fall to -23C, the coldest it has been since 1995. The yellow weather warnings have been issued for the morning in the eastern half of Scotland and England, Devon, and southwest Wales, with residents, alerted that they could face travel disruption.
UK Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir told that as the snow clears towards the east through the morning, it could become “quite pleasant outside with the sunshine, although still bitterly cold” in western areas.
The cold snap will continue tomorrow, Ms Nasir said, warning that the weather on Friday and over the weekend is expected to turn “quite hazardous” as “an area of cloud and rain” combined with extremely cold air brings further risk of snow, and “perhaps even of freezing rain”.
Cities in northern England should brace for bitter temperatures on Thursday, with Manchester and Carlisle likely to see the mercury fall as far as -4C, while York is expected to have lows of -6C.
With much of Scotland brought to a standstill by the wintry conditions, a mother and daughter in Aberdeen have been making the most of the snow by constructing a 4ft tall igloo in their back garden. Nicola Black, 29, and her five-year-old daughter Sienna spent around 15 hours building the structure.
Although some have been enjoying the weather, local councils have warned residents to take “extra care” during the cold snap. The warning came as the Environment Agency issued a total of 88 flood alerts, meaning that flooding is possible, across England, as well as nine warnings – where flooding is likely.
