Emotive Travel Marketing was awarded the contract for tourism marketing representation services in the United Kingdom and Germany earlier this month.
The company has been entrusted with maintaining engagement with the stakeholders of the industry in all the main tourism markets of Europe to promote the NT as a desired destination, once travel restrictions are normalized.
For scaled-down representation during the pandemic, the two-year contract has cost of a minimum of $187,000 per year. When leisure travel starts, the contract permits servicing levels to increase the level and expand to other countries of Europe, including France and Italy, at a total cost of just over $600,000 per year.
Deputy Opposition Leader Gerard Maley has asked about the timing of the contract, and whether it was the right use of money for the NT Government, which is expected to record an $8.4 billion debt by the end of the financial year.
“Now the Gunner Labor Government’s plan is to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars we don’t have, marketing international travel to people who can’t come,” Mr. Maley said.
The NT Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade explained that the UK and Germany were among the top five markets for visitation to the NT.
“It’s important to give the Northern Territory a presence across our main source markets in Europe where the in-market team will be focussed on awareness activities, trade training and engagement,” the department said in a statement.
