During a recent event held at the Broklyn Naval Yard , Royal Caribbean cruises previewed the new Excalibur app designed for the passengers.
The cruise company is intensely working on one of the several pieces of technology through which the passengers will be able to check in, order drinks onboard, reserve shore excursions and make dinner reservations.
The app allows the check he cruise, track luggage open cabin doors and text fellow passengers, it basically allows the passengers to do everything possible at the guest service desk or from their stateroom phone.
Richard Fain, the chairman of Royal Caribbean said that this would streamline the cruise check-in process to a more frictionless arrival where the passengers will be able to get back the first day of the cruise. Usually the first day is spent on time checking, looking for luggage and planning the rest of the week.
He further added that family time was more important than before. The Royal Caribbean will not use the proprietary technology as flexibility and adaptability were a priority.
The basic advantage of the proprietary software is that you get everything you want, though it is a bit expensive but you get exactly as per your requirement, however in the next instant it might get out of date. It is prohibitively expensive to keep upgrading everyday.
Specific wearables like Wow bands should not be embraced, one can use iPhone, iPad and android or anything connected to the internet of things. By next year if the belt buckle become the technology of the day then one can use it.
The app is currently operative on the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas having limited capability, frictionless arrival is expected by year end.
