It was announced by the federation of Gay Games that Hong Kong was selected over Washington D.C to host the Gay Games in 2022. The city will now work more to legally protect the sexual minorities.
The Federation of Gay Games after hearing the pitches of three finalists shortlisted the final country on Monday in the French capital.
Earlier in June and July the federation visited the three finalist city and spent more than three days in each location. Paris is hosting the games next year between 4-12 August.
There will be 36 sports, 14 cultural events and an academic conference that will see the participation of 15,000 people from 70 countries.
Around 23 city representatives visited Paris past weekend to make a pitch for the games where they presented proposed security measures and sites for events. Guadalajara, Mexico, also was a finalist.
The D. C Gay Games committee despite losing out to Hong Kong tweeted, thanking everyone who had put in so much of effort on the DC bid . Though they were still disappointed but were proud of the work that they did.
The federation mentioned that the kind of impact the Gay Games has in the host cities is incredible as they excel in culture, sport, economic impact and history. All the concerned areas if LGBT will get the necessary boost.
M.E. Browser, American politician and member of the democratic party mentioned that the games would have uplifted the economy with more than 15,000 participants and ten of thousands of spectators likely to attend. She further mentioned that the city might have invested $2 millions in the games.
It was now important for the United States to show that it is a welcoming place, an international city and celebrate sport.
She went on tweeting congratulating Hong Kong that the 2022 Gay Games will bring reforms and help the LGBTQ community.
