Crew have struggled to finish serving passengers during the flight. British Airways |
Following the introduction of Marks & Spencer food on-board British Airways flights earlier this year*, Airport Parking and Hotels (APH) has put together a comparing the in-flight food and drink available to purchase on-board short haul flights, helping passengers decide whether to pack-a-snack or buy on-board.
The research compares the price for various items available on-board 17 airlines, including Air Malta, Flybe and Ryanair.
One of the most popular meals on-the-go is undoubtedly a sandwich and 16 of the airlines researched offer at least one type, with the price varying from £3.10 for a cheddar cheese ploughman’s on-board British Airways flights to £8 for a turkey sandwich on-board WOW Air flights. The most common type of sandwich offered is surprisingly a vegetarian option, with 11 of the airlines researched listing at least one vegetarian sandwich in their in-flight menu and four including more than one veggie option.
Travellers partial to a tub of Pringles while travelling are in luck, since 11 airlines include a 40g tub on their in-flight menu, with the price varying from £1.80 with four airlines, including Flybe and Thomas Cook, to £3.63 for the same product on-board Icelandair flights. The lowest priced crisps available to purchase is a £1 packet of Seabrook crisps from Jet2, with other options including easy-to-share Boxerchips, priced at £2.26 with Ryanair, and Ireland’s Tayto crisps, sold by Aer Lingus for £1.37.
It’s important to stay hydrated while flying and fortunately all airlines researched sell water on-board, however the price does vary, with a 500ml bottle ranging from £1.80 with six airlines including British Airways, to £2.73 with four airlines including Aer Lingus and Air Berlin. Holidaymakers travelling with Air Malta should note that the airline initially supplies each passenger with a free small bottle of water, with each bottle priced at £1.83 thereafter.
For travellers looking to sit back with a hot drink and some chocolate prior to landing, the price for a regular coffee varies from £1.83 for a cup of Nescafe with Air Malta, to £2.73 with three airlines, including a cup of Lavazza coffee on Ryanair flights. The price for a KitKat chocolate bar ranges from £1.20 with two airlines, easyJet and British Airways, to £2.73 with Icelandair.
For those who want to celebrate the beginning of their holiday, the price of a 187ml bottle of wine ranges from £3.63 with Wizz Air to £7.26 with Icelandair. The price for a 330ml can of beer also varies from £2.73 for a Warsteiner on-board flights with Air Berlin or a can of Stella Artois on-board Brussels Airlines flights, to £6.35 with Icelandair. Economy travellers flying with TAP won’t need to rummage for their purse during their flight, since selected food and drink, including wine and one sandwich, is provided on a complimentary basis and similarly, Icelandair and Finnair offer passengers complimentary water and hot drinks.
