The Russian Arctic will be welcoming visitors from June 15th onward. It happened for the first time this year, the nuclear icebreaker “50 Years of Victory” sailed from Murmansk for 11 days in the Arctic Ocean. There were a total of 125 tourists from Asia and Europe on board. The arctic tourism in Russia is developing fast. Nevertheless, the government is keeping a close look on the interests of the visitors.
To quote Oleg Safonov, the head of the Federal Tourism Agency, ‘the potential of tourism development in the Arctic is obvious and far from fully realized. By combining the efforts of the Federal Tourism Agency, regional authorities, members of the tourist market, the Russian Arctic can and should be made accessible. It possesses natural and cultural originality that is interesting to many.’
Every country of the “Arctic Five” tries their best to exploit the tourism potential of their northern lands to a tee. In this regard, Denmark is the most successful country which includes the easily accessible (from transport point of view) to Greenland. Besides, Norwegian Svalbard is equally famous among the tourists across the globe with comfortable accommodation in the capital of the archipelago Longyearbyen.
