Being one of the world’s biggest airlines, United tried to squirm the way out of a row about passengers’ clothing where they said that dress code for airline travellers with passes and free tickets will be eased.
United said: “We have a dress code that we ask employees and pass riders to follow. The passengers this morning were United pass riders and not in compliance with our dress code for company benefit travel.”
Although United tweeted that they shall have the right to refuse passengers who are not properly clothed via their Contract of Carriage, the rules only say that the airline will refuse to fly “Passengers who are barefoot or not properly clothed.” It later transpired that the passengers were travelling on free tickets, for which a strict dress code applies.
It is the rule for most of the airlines who have stipulated higher standards of dress for staff and their families travelling on “non-revenue” tickets or passes. Overall, it states that pass riders’ overall appearance should be well-groomed, neat, clean and in good taste.
