Turkey’s tourism income falls sharply to US$22 billion in 2016

According to the latest figures by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), Turkey's tourism income fell sharply to US$22.1 billion in 2016. TurkStat reported that tourism income decreased by 27.2% and declined to $ 4 billion 782 million 729 thousand in the last fourth quarter of 2016. While 71.9% of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 28.1% was obtained from citizens resident abroad.
Visitors organise their travel individually or with package tour. While individual expenditures constituted     $ 4 billion 30 million 717 thousand of the total tourism income, $ 752 million 12 thousand of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.
Tourism income in 2016 decreased by 29.7% and declined to $ 22 billion 107 million 440 thousand compared to the previous year. While 72.8% of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 27.2% was obtained from citizens that reside abroad.
In this year, while individual expenditures constituted $ 18 billion 495 million 978 thousand of the total tourism income, $ 3 billion 611 million 462 thousand of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.
TurkStat also revealed that the number of Turkish citizens traveling abroad last year decreased by 9.8 percent compared to 2015 and declined to 7.9 million people; these made an average expenditure of $640 per capita.
Last year's tourism expenditure, which is the expenditure of Turkish citizens reside in Turkey and visiting abroad, also decreased by 11.4 percent compared to 2015 and declined to around $5 billion.
