Dutch carrier KLM has tried a new biometric boarding technology at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. According to this technology, it will allow the passengers to pass through the gates without flashing their documents.

Developed by electronic identity solutions company Vision Box, the solution uses facial recognition. The sole idea of this new biometric application is to expedite passenger boarding.

The three-month trial is being undertaken at just one KLM gate at Schiphol. Passengers can register at the kiosk, get their photographs saved and scan the passport and boarding pass

Passengers who wish to take part in the trial and beyond can register at a kiosk by scanning their passport as well as the boarding pass. When they would go through the biometric eGate, passengers will be scanned by a second camera but won’t need to show any documents.

There are many technology companies who are working with biometrics in an effort to smooth the airport experience.

Rockwell Collins developed a system which relies on an infrared camera. According to their technology, it will take the photographs of the passengers during check-in and store the biometric data in the cloud. A second infrared camera would be deployed at the security checkpoint, verifying a passenger’s identity and alleviating the need to present identification or a ticket to an agent.
