During the initial half of the year 2016, Tokyo welcomed about 6,474,000 foreign tourists and this is the highest number of tourist arrivals to date as revealed by a survey conducted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
This figure also marks an increase of about 14.7% in the number of tourists visiting this region, according to the municipal government.
About 4.8 million foreigners had resided in Tokyo during the first half of 2016 and that marks a 14% increase in the tourist arrivals in 2015. However, the number of people visiting Tokyo for day trips in the first half of 2016 was approximately 1.7 million.
But then, the average amount of money spent on every person has decreased.
In case of foreign tourists who had resided on Tokyo in the period between April and June 2016, the approximate amount that was spent on tourism-associated costs was about 89,720 yen. This figure marks a decrease of about 4,707 yen as compared to the same period in 2015. Also, the average amount that was spent on business-related costs was 1,00,909 yen.
A representative of Tokyo Metropolitan Government said that since China has come up with higher customs in April.
Having said that, there has been a slump in shopping sprees by Chinese tourists.
