Cuenca hosted “The Meeting of the Regional Secretariat for South America of OWHC”, organized by the OWHC and Cuenca´s Mayor Office.
This event that took place from December 01 – 02, 2016 gathered different proposals and experiences regarding management of the historic heritage issues, and had as its main topic: “Neighborhoods: Inhabiting the World Cultural Heritage”.
The lectures were given by senior authorities from OWHC, among them:
Dennis Riccard, General Secretary of the OWHC
Gerardo José Corres, Vice-president of the OWHC Office in Oaxaca de Juárez, México with the lecture: “Voices from the neighborhoods of Oaxaca de Juárez, México”.
Pablo Abad, Secretary of Planning of the Municipality of Cuenca, lecturer of: “Tools for community participation”
Walter Debedenetti, Director of Historic Heritage of Colonia, Uruguay: “Management plan for Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay” Paulina Kaplan, Regional Coordinator for South America, Valparaíso, Chile: “Shopping districts in the Historic Centers. Valparaíso Case”
The meeting coincided with the 17th anniversary of the Declaration of the city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was held in the auditorium of the recently restored “Pasaje León”, located in the Historic Centre.
The conference stressed that “(…) not only the buildings which have monumental value are cultural heritage, but also its people and lifestyles” Paulina Kaplan.
Cuenca’s Tourism Board welcome all the attendees to the Meeting with a guided tour around the Historic Heritage sites of Cuenca, delighting visitors with amazing sights of: the Cloister of the Monastery “Las Conceptas” (more than 400 years of history), San Luis Seminary (1813), Del Sagrario Church or “Old Cathedral” (1557), Remigio Crespo Museum (1910), among other beautifully preserved buildings that constitute Cuenca’s Cultural Heritage.
The main mission of these type of meetings is to build a focal point among the cities and to share the values and objectives of the OWHC.
