The government of Thailand is planning to set-up and promote the “must-see” (tong chom) markets as the new tourist attractions where local people sell products with local characteristics.
Government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that the Commerce Ministry had set up 77 “must-see” markets for people to sell local products in all 77 provinces including Bangkok in the first year of the implementation of the government’s pracharat (people’s state) policy.
This new policy is expected to generate 400,000 to 500,000 baht in revenue a day and also enhance the tourism image of Thailand. Must-see markets are those where the quality local products are sold at reasonable prices and the neighbouring areas are beautified and arranged in a good order to draw tourists, specially foreign travellers.
Ranging from consumer products to handicraft and farm products, markets such as Sarokrao market in Buri Ram, Nawong market in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Kad Khwuang Muang in Nan and Lam Phaya floating market in Nakhon Pathom can be an enthralling experience for the international tourists.
The government has plans to set up 231 “must-see” markets, three in each province, by 2018.
With more promotion from TAT, these markets can be major tourists’ attractions, help to earn significant revenue and strengthen the local economy.
