Travellers and residents are asked to be cautious as a number of smaller earth quakes at the Salton Sea in California might trigger a massive magnitude 7 earth quake by 4th October, Tuesday.

Geologists have predicted about the massive quake after discovering several tremors near the San Andreas Fault in California.

The California Office of Emergency Services has issued a warning about a probable earthquake, which might affect several parts of southern California like San Bernardino, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Thomas Jordan, the director of the Southern California Earthquake Centre has informed, “Any time there is significant seismic activity in the vicinity of the San Andreas Fault, we seismologists get nervous. We recognize that the probability of having a large earthquake goes up.”

Geologists in California have managed to find almost 140 quakes under the saline lake of Salton Sea in the north of San Diego.

According to a 2008 USGS simulation, a quake of magnitude 7 or more has the capacity to kill over 1,800 people and to cause a financial loss of $200 billion.

The initial tremors have started on Monday around 4 am local time. The tremors have occurred three to seven miles under the Salton Sea and the tremors continued for over 24 hours. Among the 140 quakes, three have been measured to be above magnitude four.

Although the risk is of the earthquake is lowering with every passing hour but it is advisable for the travellers and the residents to stay alert.
