Crystal Serenity that is the largest ever cruise ship to have sailed through the Northwest Passage entered the docks of New York on Friday morning. Captain Birger Voraland exclaimed that it was quite a fantastic voyage aboard the full-sized chip.
At the Northwest Passage, the Arctic Ocean links the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Generally, thick sea ice and glaciers make the route of Northwest Passage quite impossible to pass through.
However, the changing climate has made the route easier to navigate thanks the thinning ice and warming temperatures.
The ship was carrying additional safety equipment that included ice radar. The operators of the cruise ship also arranged for cargo flights to northern communities to collect fresh supplied for the five-star restaurants of the vessel.
Voraland said that the cruise ship also had two experienced Canadian air pilots who were knowledgeable about the ice.
The ship had 13 stories and was three football fields long. It left Seward in Alaska on 16th August along with 600 crew members and 900 guests. Then, it headed about 900 miles through the Arctic and on to New York.
The cruise was made about three years ago so everything was absolutely unique about the ship, said John Stoll, vice president of Crystal Serenity cruise.
Robert Rosenwald and Barbara Peters said that the journey onboard the cruise ship was truly adventurous.
Barbara Peters said that the trip was quite exciting. And, he added that the idea was to explore wild things along the cruise voyage and they succeeded in doing so.
In order to get the most of the cruise experience, the passengers had to pay $1,000 to $4,000 each day. Peters said that the fact that the earth was warming up presented great opportunities for the cruise ship.
