Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has added Milwaukee to its portfolio with the official opening of The Kimpton Journeyman Hotel. As the first and only hotel in the vibrant Third Ward, the nine-storey red brick building fits perfectly into the neighbourhood, pairing substantial materials and interior craftsman finishes. With a name that pays homage to those who spend years honing their craft and travelling the world, The Journeyman is located in the heart of the city’s bustling arts and cultural district, an ideal place for those who seek an urban adventure. The project was a joint venture between Milwaukee-based HKS Holdings LLC, Kahler-Slater Architects, and CD Smith Construction.
Designed by New York-based interior design firm Warren Red, the 158-room hotel marries industrial surfaces with dramatic elements. Walking into the lobby, guests are greeted by a custom 20ft long chandelier with 200 lights, a pair of fireplaces and cozy bench seating. Details are inspired by the city’s history, from guest room bombe chests, polished in a bold red and black stripe with engine numbers from Milwaukee’s old locomotives, to hand-hewn wood desks with a live edge and cold-rolled steel base, in deference to craftsmen of the day.
The Journeyman offers more than 6,300 square feet of indoor meeting and event space. The grand Assembly Hall Ballroom and Founders Room rooftop spaces are particularly attractive for wedding events and unique corporate gatherings.
For locals and visitors alike, The Kimpton Journeyman represents a new destination in this foodie town. Located adjacent to the hotel, Tre Rivali restaurant features a vibrant bar and an adjoining café, while the ninth-floor rooftop bar, The Outsider, offers stunning views of the city. Both are helmed by Executive Chef Heather Terhune and Lead Bartender Gen Longoria.
“From locals seeking something fresh and new, to out-of-town guests eager to learn more about Brew City, The Kimpton Journeyman team is here to make sure we exceed all expectations,” says Patrick Gaskin, General Manager. “It’s our goal to ensure the moment guests arrive they feel taken care of and appreciated; like family.”
Urban exploration is a big part of The Journeyman experience. Guests have free use of custom-made leather backpacks, along with well-curated itineraries of cool things to see and do in the neighbourhood. Created from locally sourced leather by Milwaukee fashion designer and artisan Heather Hambrecht, the backpacks can be filled with provisions from Tre Rivali to make a day of it.
A number of additional health-minded wellness options are available, including complimentary custom PUBLIC Bikes rentals, in-room Gaiam yoga mats and 24-hour access to the hotel’s expansive fitness centre. Guests are invited weekly to a complimentary strength, movement and parkour class led by celebrity trainer from NBC’s “Strong” Adam Von Rothfelder every Tuesday at 7 a.m., from 12 July 2016.
Guest amenities at The Journeyman include all of Kimpton’s signature offerings, such as the Forgot It? We’ve Got It! menu of travel and vacation essentials, a thoughtful mini bar with a local flair and Wisconsin beers, and complimentary Wi-Fi for Kimpton Karma Rewards members. A complimentary morning coffee and tea service, as well as a hosted nightly beer/wine hour, are offered in the Living Room. As with all Kimpton properties, The Journeyman is pet-friendly and welcomes four-legged guests with a VIP (Very Important Pet) amenity, pet bowl and pet bed.
The Journeyman represents a large presence for Kimpton in the Midwest, joining five hotels in Chicago (Hotel Monaco, Hotel Allegro, Hotel Burnham, Hotel Palomar and the Gray Hotel opening later this summer), The Grand Hotel in Minneapolis and The Schofield Hotel in Cleveland.
