Uncovering renovations needed for the ideal summer vacation rental

The survey report, entitled, The Ideal Vacation Rental Home for Millennials, Boomers and Beyond: Insights from The Home Depot and Tripping.com Survey details what vacationers are looking for in a home rental. Among our survey’s top findings:
  • If you are a homeowner or condo owner renting out your place this year, make sure you’re updating your home’s Wi-Fi and internet access. 56% of respondents said it was an interior feature they would be willing to pay extra for, and 86% said it was the technology they desired most for their rental.
  • Communal spaces such as kitchens are extremely important to vacation home renters. It pays to spruce up indoor kitchen and outdoor grilling areas, because 64% of those surveyed ranked them as top amenities for the vacation homes they plan on renting, especially since 41% use these vacation homes for family reunions.
  • Misleading pictures on a vacation rental listing site for a home rental is the top pet peeve of those surveyed, so vacation rental owners should make sure they are taking the appropriate pictures to show off the top features of a property, like a washer/dryer, new AC unit, or modern TV.
  • Make the vacation property amenity-rich, in order to attract business travelers. 16% of those surveyed have used a rental for business travel accommodations – and the number is growing.
More amenities can mean more potential income for vacation home owners: survey respondents noted they'd be willing to pay extra for a dishwasher, stainless steel appliances, and kitchen accessories. When considering renovations, home owners should think Tech and Eco-Friendly; one in four Millennial males, for example, expect a smart TV, while 42% of all respondents want to stay in an energy efficient home, and 52% expect to see recycling options.
