Thanks to its tasty tapas and flavoursome paella, solo UK travellers have named Spain as the top destination for a solo foodie holiday, according to new data released by leading travel dating website and app TourBar.com.
Some 19.6% of TourBar’s UK members who plan to travel this summer have named the home of sangria and chorizo as their top destination to visit for a gastronomic adventure. The exotic tastes of Thailand also proved to be popular with 18.2% of UK TourBar members looking to visit the country to taste it’s well-known dishes such as pad Thai and tom yum soup. Other popular countries for food-related travel included a staycation in the UK (14.8%), the USA (13.5%) and Italy (8.8%).
By using TourBar’s website and app, its 2,000 active UK members can sign up for free and register an upcoming solo trip to meet other food-lovers who are also planning to travel to a new destination alone to sample its cuisine. Alternatively, for those members who aren’t planning to travel abroad any time soon but are still interested in meeting like-minded foodies, they can register as a Guide to tour solo travellers who are planning visits to their home city.
In terms of the type of travellers taking a trip in search of new cuisines, the new research reveals males are most likely to take a food related trip (60%) and likewise 30% of those travelling for food are between the ages of 25 and 34-years-old. This age group was closely followed by UK members aged 35-44 (29%) and those aged 45-54 (23%).
TourBar’s Public Relations Manager, Anastasia Zolotova, added: “For many travellers, tasting a country’s different cuisines can be a great way to experience its culture. It can also be an excellent opportunity to get to grips with new ingredients and learn new recipes to recreate back home. TourBar is free to download and simple to use allowing those who want to meet fellow foodies who may be planning a similar trip to find someone with a similar passion.”
