Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO, was a guest speaker at the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) Global Sustainable Aviation Forum in Montreal, Canada, today. In his remarks, he said he was optimistic that governments at the ICAO Assembly in September will agree on a global carbon offsetting scheme for international aviation. While accepting that many details have still to be worked out, Tyler said that the proposal met the airline industry’s needs for a practical, transparent, fair and environmentally-credible market based measure, and for it to be implementable by 2020—in time to achieve the industry’s commitment to carbon neutral growth.
"Airlines are determined to do the right thing in mitigating their climate change impact. And we are counting on the 191 member states of ICAO to enable that important result by reaching an agreement later this year on a global market based measure," said Tyler.
