Airport transit may be hindered due to road construction in Dubai

The expansion program in a number of junctions near Dubai International Airport could affect daily commute to the airport over the next 24 months.

The roadworks are being planned to ease congestion during peak periods and increase traffic capacity at a number of junctions along with the Airport Road, Marrakesh and Casablanca Street. The expansion plan has been implemented to serve the growth demand said Dubai Airports’ CEO Paul Griffiths.

Passenger traffic has been rising to more than double over the past seven years and has become the world number one airport for international passengers.

Griffiths added: “Expansion in the air obviously drives the need for expansion on the ground and throughout our period of continuous and considerable growth the RTA has been instrumental in supporting access and connectivity to the airport for the citizens of Dubai, including the commencement of metro service in 2009.

“The new airport road expansion programme will serve to further enhance access and provide us with the capacity we need to serve the growing demand.”

Commuters will face some disruptions while commuting from Sharjah using the Al Garhoud Bridge or Business Bay Bridge for their daily travel. D70 junction connecting Airport Road to Casablanca Street (near Prime Hospital-Millennium Hotel) will also pose some obstruction.

Dubai Airports has further customers to allow additional time to drive to the airport during peak periods, specifically on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and holiday travel periods due to high passenger loads.

A number of road constructions are in the pipeline to improve connectivity and better road transit within Dubai and Sharjah.
