Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Tan Dung has agreed in principle with the pilot operation of electric tramcars to carry tourists within limited areas in six localities: Hai Phong, Da Nang, Lao Cai, Thua Thien-Hue, Khanh Hoa and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
The PM urged the People’s Committees of the provinces and cities to summarize the result of the pilot operation after six months to draw lessons for the ensuing implementation.
According to the Ministry of Transport, together with Ha Noi, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh, which received the PM’s approval for the pilot program, the six localities put the tramcars into use to meet the real demand of local tourists.
Currently, about 30 enterprises and individuals are operating 1,086 tramcars in the 10 provinces and cities.
After the initial period of implementation, the project showed remarkable results such as ensuring absolute safety with slow speeds; creating civilized and convenient services; and being friendly with the environment with less pollution and less noise than other types of transport.
